Seapoint Martello
(Tower No.14 South)
Inaugurating the Cannon
10 July 2012

While the Seapoint Tower has been partly restored by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, it has only recently acquired a newly cast 24 pounder cannon.

On 10 July 2012 the cannon was getting its first test firing on location.

It had already been proof fired in England and declared fit for duty.

This inauguration was timed to coincide with the launching of a book on The Martello Towers of Dublin published jointly by the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal County Councils.

This book was the culmination of a huge amount of work by a whack of people over and above the four authors who formally brought it into being.

Sound the Alarm. The French are sighted.

Relax it's only the French Ambassador come to check out the book.

"You wouldn't actually fire on a woman, would you?"
"Why no Ma'am, not without His Lordship's express permission".

"Well, that's a relief".

Might Tim be playfully reminding the Ambassador that her presence here today could constitute high treason, given that the original purpose of the Towers was to blow the French out of the water.

And might the Lord Mayor be discreetly adducing some mitigating factors? After all, the French were coming to help the Irish get rid of the English? And, the Tower guns would today be more likely to salute than shoot the French?

In fact, No.7 Tower had done just that very thing last summer.

The Firing Team. Take a bow.

And to the point of today's exercise.

And, finally, not forgetting the magnificent book itself. You can hear Tim talking about the book on Pat Kenny (when he can get in a word edgeways).
